Quickly assess whether Aspergillus niger is the right production host
Home/ Insights/ Technical News/ Can your enzyme or protein be produced by Aspergillus?

Aspergillus niger (A.niger) is a popular industrial production strain due to its ability to achieve high enzyme production yields. However, only the right combination of target protein and microorganism leads to high production yields and thus to economical production processes. But what is the right combination?

Our Plug & Produce System enables us to quickly determine whether your protein can be efficiently expressed in our proprietary A. niger production strain before embarking on full strain development. This early feasibility assessment helps you to:

  • Identify the most promising production host
  • Avoid unnecessary development work
  • Reduce project costs and timelines
  • Make data-driven decisions at an early stage

The expression platform on which the system is based is our industrial A. niger production strain, whose genome allows directed multicopy integration of several "gene expression cassettes" at the same time.

A proven industrial Aspergillus niger platform

Our platform is built on a proprietary industrial BSL-1 Aspergillus niger strain designed for high-level protein production.

Key capabilities include:

  • Directed integration of multiple gene expression cassettes at once
  • Efficient expression of homologous and heterologous proteins
  • Double-digit gram-per-litre protein titers
  • Industrially relevant fermentation performance

The platform provides a reliable starting point for developing scalable manufacturing processes.

From feasibility to production strain development

Once we have confirmed that your target protein is suitable for production in Aspergillus, we move directly into strain and process optimization. Using our proprietary CRISPR-BMC genome engineering technology, we tailor the production strain to maximize expression, productivity and process robustness.

Unlike conventional development approaches, we optimize the production strain and fermentation process simultaneously. This integrated workflow accelerates development and helps unlock the full production potential of your molecule.

Our Plug & Produce System is ideally suited for companies developing:

  • Industrial enzymes
  • Food enzymes
  • Alternative proteins
  • Precision fermentation products
  • Recombinant proteins

How industry can benefit from this system

We offer this technology through our R&D division at the Zwingenberg site, and customers in the fields of enzyme production and precision fermentation in particular can benefit from this platform.

With our A.niger production strains and matching fermentation processes, we are able to achieve high production yields for enzymes and proteins. In this way, we help our customers to meet the high demand in various application areas with highly economical production processes.

Benefits in a nutshell:

  • Rapidly evaluate Aspergillus niger as a production host
  • Reduce technical and commercial development risk
  • Shorten strain development timelines
  • Achieve high protein yields with an industrially proven platform
  • Benefit from integrated strain engineering and bioprocess development
  • Accelerate the path to commercial manufacturing
