Sustainable precious metal recovery through energy-efficient bioleaching? Here’s how.

Developing innovative solutions for sustainable industrial production demands unconventional thinking, deep expertise, and an interdisciplinary approach. A prime example is the collaboration between BRAIN Biotech AG and PX Group, a leading player in precision metallurgy, where BRAIN contributed advanced microbial and bioprocess technology for gold recycling.

Selecting the right strain

We started by screening our "Cleantech value strain collection" (> 2000 microorganisms) from our BioArchive. These microbial strains are pre-characterized and known to have special characteristics that allow their use in challenging applications, e.g. capture CO2, production of biopolymers or interaction with metals.

Among these strains, we discovered and later patented a new microbial species that has the astonishing ability to efficiently dissolve precious metals including gold: Pseudomonas metallosolvens. In a miniaturized laboratory setup, we rigorously tested and optimized our strain’s bioleaching performance on diverse waste materials.

Using intelligent test planning with Design of Experiment (DoE), we minimized the number of required experiments while maximizing insights. From the outset, we assessed both, strain efficiency and process economics to ensure a commercially viable solution.

Meeting challenges through interdisciplinary work

To validate scalability and produce the first tangible gold samples, we developed the BioXtractor, a container-based pilot plant tailored to the bioleaching of e-waste on a cubic metre scale. A key challenge was to provide oxygen and reduce shear forces, which led us to develop special agitators and optimize aeration. Process engineering, electrical engineering, metalworking and programming worked hand in hand to realize this project very effectively. The container, designed for mobility, is largely self-sufficient and has a flexible remote control system.

By seamlessly integrating microbial discovery, process development and implementation – along with close collaboration with our partner – we rapidly transformed a bold concept into a fully functional system.

This project is a testament to how innovation, interdisciplinary expertise and agility can turn even the most ambitious ideas into reality.
